The UK government plans to introduce an additional levy for casinos and bookmakers, requiring them to pay 1% of their GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue), amounting to £100 million annually based on recent figures. These funds will be directed toward research, educational projects, and programs aimed at mitigating the negative effects of gambling.
British media expect an official announcement about the changes this week. The mandatory levy will replace the previous voluntary donation system starting in April next year. Supporters argue that the mandatory levy will ensure consistent funding for essential social programs.
Most operators have already been contributing generously to social initiatives. Since 2023, the five largest operators in the UK have voluntarily donated 1% of their GGR. Since 2020, Flutter alone has contributed £70 million. Overall, the industry has reacted positively to the mandatory levy, though some representatives believe the reform lacks thorough planning.
The introduction of the levy may change not only its status but also the primary recipient of the funds. Previously, most of the collected funds went to the charity GambleAware, which distributed them to various projects. Now, it is expected that the majority of the funds will go to the government-run Office for Health Improvement and Disparities.
