Even after 25 years, Age of Empires 2 remains one of the most popular strategy games, especially after its 2019 remaster. The developers continue to release new content, and recently, World’s Edge studio announced a unique upcoming DLC—Chronicles: Battle for Greece. Interestingly, this expansion is not being developed by World’s Edge itself.

The DLC transports players to Ancient Greece, covering events from the Ionian Revolt to the Peloponnesian Wars. It includes a campaign with 21 scenarios, enhanced by animated cutscenes.

In terms of gameplay, Chronicles: Battle for Greece introduces significant changes. Players will have access to three new civilizations—the Athenians, Spartans, and Achaemenids—along with 74 new units (55 land-based and 19 naval). One of the standout features is a new naval combat system unique to this expansion. Additionally, there will be adjustments to the tech tree, though the new civilizations will not be available in ranked matches.

The developers explained that they aimed to experiment with new gameplay mechanics, particularly in naval battles, without disrupting the balance of ranked play. While this expansion focuses on single-player content, they reassured fans that future DLCs will continue to introduce new civilizations for competitive modes.

What makes Battle for Greece especially notable is that it was created by the CaptureAge team, known for developing the match spectator tool in Age of Empires 2. This team, which has now grown to include veterans of mod development and AAA games, was integrated into the AoE development process several years ago. Now, they are responsible for creating a full-fledged expansion.

Chronicles: Battle for Greece is the first in a series of expansions under the Chronicles title, which will focus on storytelling and historical accuracy, with an emphasis on single-player campaigns.

The DLC will be released for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition on November 14, so fans won’t have to wait much longer. Did you find the news interesting and informative?
