Australians spend the most money on gambling globally, and the most popular reason for betting on sports is the desire to win money. 26% of the global population has gambled at least once. Approximately 4.2 billion people gamble at least once a year. A study conducted in 44 countries revealed that 56% of respondents admitted to gambling within the past 12 months. In Australia, 73% of adults engage in gambling, which is the highest figure worldwide.

  • United States – 58 million,
  • Germany – 29 million,
  • United Kingdom – 29 million,
  • Canada – 19.3 million,
  • Australia – 6.8 million.

Casino and online gambling revenues were estimated at $249 billion in 2022. This figure is expected to grow to $263.3 billion this year. The global online gambling market was valued at $90 billion last year. It is projected to reach $370 billion by 2032. There are 176 million active online casino users worldwide, with 127.8 million using apps or visiting bookmaker websites. Europe generates 41% of the global gross gaming revenue (GGR) in the online segment. Over 100 million people play poker online globally. Currently, the poker market is valued at $96.2 billion and is expected to grow to $170 billion within seven years.

The most popular reason for betting on sports is the opportunity to win money, chosen by 48% of players. Other motives include:

  • increasing adrenaline (35%),
  • enhancing interest as a fan (33%),
  • competing (29%),
  • treating it as a hobby (18%),
  • diversifying leisure time (18%),
  • betting for social reasons (14%).

There are over 9,000 casinos worldwide, most of which are in North America. Canada, the USA, and Mexico host 3,451 casinos. Macau has the highest density of gambling establishments, with 41 casinos spread across an area of 118 square kilometers. Las Vegas, though three times larger, has 60 casinos. As of 2023, 4,792 businesses related to casinos and online gambling are registered worldwide.
This represents a 4.1% increase compared to 2022. Australians spend the most on gambling globally, averaging $1,000 annually.
This equates to $54–$71 per day of play. In Ireland, the annual figure is $713, in the US – $261, and in the UK – $169. One in 400 adults (0.23%) has sought help for gambling-related issues.
