Detroit police have identified professional poker player Craig Bergeron as the prime suspect in a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Monday evening. Authorities allege that Bergeron, 34, shot and killed a man in his 30s before fleeing the scene in a white SUV. The incident has shocked both the local community and the poker world.
On Tuesday night, Bergeron was apprehended by law enforcement and placed in Wayne County Jail. He is currently facing first-degree murder charges, a serious accusation that could result in life imprisonment if convicted. Police have not disclosed whether Bergeron has entered a plea or retained legal representation. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Tommy “Mike” Ireland, was found unconscious on Detroit’s east side at approximately 8:40 p.m. on Monday. Police arrived on the scene shortly after receiving emergency calls. Despite their efforts, Ireland was pronounced dead.

Authorities have released limited information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, citing an ongoing investigation. Preliminary reports indicate that Bergeron may have had an altercation with another individual prior to the fatal incident. Bergeron’s involvement in such a tragic event has left many in disbelief. A Michigan native, he is widely respected in the poker community for his achievements in both live and online games. According to Hendon Mob, Bergeron has amassed over $1.3 million in live tournament earnings during his career.
His most notable accomplishments include winning the 2011 WSOPC $560 No-Limit Hold’em event and placing fourth at the 2010 European Poker Tour Main Event in Deauville, where he earned $312,853. Despite his success, Bergeron had largely stepped away from the poker scene in recent years, with his last live cash recorded in 2019 at the Mid-States Poker Tour Michigan State Championship.
Online, Bergeron was a dominant force during the poker boom, competing under the alias “hu4rollz.” His skill and charisma earned him a feature in a 2011 Business Insider article on the state of online poker. On Thursday evening, family and friends of Tommy Ireland gathered for a candlelight vigil to celebrate his life and mourn his untimely death. Described as a kind and loving individual, Ireland’s passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew him.

“It’s chaos. No one should have to lose a loved one to senseless violence,” said Richard Castro, Ireland’s cousin. “When I say Tommy was a good man, he truly was. He didn’t deserve this.” Ashley Ireland, the victim’s sister, expressed her family’s grief and disbelief, stating that they had no prior connection to Bergeron. She emphasized the need for justice and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The tragic event has sparked conversations about gun violence and its devastating effects on families and communities. Detroit residents are calling for greater efforts to curb violent crime and ensure public safety. As the investigation continues, the poker community—once a source of camaraderie and respect for Bergeron—is left grappling with the implications of his alleged actions.
